Doreen Davies produced Jimmy Young’s show on Radio 1 in the 70s and then went to become Head of Music and she was the one who decided what would appear on the playlists. She was the one that decided what the population of the UK would listen to. She even made decisions as to what people would listen to in the morning, saying on the BBC programme Pop Charts Britannia: 60 Years of the Top 10 (and I paraphrase) “we would not play heavy metal or punk because parents would be telling their kids off for playing that kind of music when they should be getting ready for school.”
She is the ultimate Nannying Fussbucket and of the mentality that “we know best what people should listen too”. I wonder why she never worked out why one hit wonders would get past her controlling of the playlist. It could be that she never got it that the public is the real entity in charge of what is popular and what is not. That’s why even the record companies with all their cheating couldn’t fool the system 100% of the time either.
